Chocolate Dipped Strawberries Lip Balm

Mmmm. Chocolate dipped strawberries! Does anything say Valentine’s Day and romance more than these simple yet delectable treats? Maybe red roses and a bottle of champagne, but I think I’ll just go straight for the chocolate. 😉 With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I decided to challenge myself to make a lip balm that tasted just like chocolate dipped strawberries.

I was inspired by two recipes, the Strawberries and Champagne Lip Soother and the Orange Butter Lip Balm. Both lip balms are wonderful in their own special ways, but on their own they just weren’t quite the perfect lip balms for me. I decided to combine the long lasting gloss from the Orange Butter Lip Balm and the skin conditioning of the Strawberries and Champagne Lip Soother and make a brand new recipe. Join me in the blog kitchen as we make this wonderful lip balm!

Weigh all ingredients except the flavors and extracts into your microwave safe container. Microwave using short bursts of time, stirring every 20 to 30 seconds until all the ingredients have been melted. Do NOT microwave until the mixture is completely liquid as the mixture will be too hot to handle. The Candelilla Wax will be the last ingredient to melt and if you are patient, simply stirring will melt the remaining Candelilla Wax. Using a transfer pipette, fill your lip balm tubes and allow to cool. Try to not move the containers much until the lip balm has set to prevent accidental messes.

Notes:

This lip balm has a great flavor. It is my new favorite and I can say that because I’m on my second tube! 🙂

Please note that the Baking Chocolate does NOT color the lips, so even guys will be happy to use this lip balm. (The guys who tested this for me thought it was “Totally Awesome!”)

If you feel that this lip balm isn’t sweet enough, the best way to solve this is by adjusting the Avocado Oil down to 14% and increasing the Sugar Baby Flavor Oil to 2%.

If you want more of a Milk Chocolate flavor, reduce your Baking Chocolate to 5%, increase your Cocoa Butter to 14% and add 2% Chocolate Cream Flavor Oil.

Why did I choose the ingredients used in this recipe?

Avocado Butter and Oil – Avocado Oil is used in many different cosmetics and no wonder! The oil contains just some of the many nutrients found in the avocado and those nutrients soothe the skin to help you maintain soft skin. This oil is one of the few oils that most people love no matter their skin type.
Castor Oil – Castor Oil is my go-to ingredient when I want a long lasting lip balm, salve or cream. This oil has a characteristically sticky or tacky feel that doesn’t absorb into the skin easily. Great for that product you want to stay on the skin for a while.
Candelilla Wax – I wanted to use the Candelilla Wax because I have a lot of it in the blog kitchen and also because I’ve been seeing more requests for lip balms with this wax. I thought that I could take care of both problems with one blog post.
Cocoa Butter, Regular – I used the Cocoa Butter to give the chocolate taste. In testing I found that using just Cocoa Butter wasn’t enough to give a decent chocolate flavor without being overwhelmed by the Strawberry Swirl Flavor. I decided to add Baking Chocolate to aid my chocolate flavor
Baking Chocolate – I added the unsweetened Baking Chocolate to change the chocolate flavor from a weak, one-dimensional flavor to a full-bodied chocolate flavor that could compliment but not drown out the Strawberry Swirl Flavor.
Calendula Oil Extract – Nobody wants to kiss their sweetheart with chapped and cracked lips. I added the Calendula Oil Extract to this lip balm because it is known to help combat rough, scaly skin. It does help too! I can actually kiss my husband now without feeling like my lips are scratching his.
Orchid Extract – Orchid Extract is frequently used for its skin conditioning properties and great nutrient profile. Orchid Extract is one of my favorites for changing a product from great to fantastic. Will it help smooth lips? Definitely!
Pumpkin Seed Extract – Who wouldn’t love Pumpkin Seed Extract? It stimulates new skin growth, has a high content of unsaturated fatty acids. Another great reason to have smooth lips!

Enjoy!
