Orange Butter Lip Balm

Being outdoors in the elements is tough on skin no matter the season, and the lips seem to take the brunt of it. Allow me to introduce a lip balm recipe that will make your lips lovely again.
Babassu Oil stars in this show, and its performance is nothing short of magical. It is a light, non-greasy oil that is solid at room temperature.
There is White Cocoa Butter, Shea Oil, Castor Oil, and Beeswax to round out the formula. I used a lot of Castor Oil in this recipe, knowing that the flavor might be a bit weird, but I wanted the thick and rich feeling it adds since the Babassu and Shea Oils have a lighter, less greasy feel. While Cocoa Butter is a wonderful addition to lip balms, I did not want the chocolate odor and flavor competing with the orange and vanilla, so I chose the odorless variety.
If you’ve never tried Babassu Oil in a lip balm, grab these supplies and make some with me. Don’t be surprised if you never go back to other solid oils!

Before starting to make the lip balm, set up the tubes in the filling tray. Here is a helpful tutorial about using the Lip Balm Filling Tray.
Weigh Beeswax, Babassu Oil, Cocoa Butter, Shea Oil, and Castor Oil in a heat-safe container. Microwave in 30-second increments, stirring between heatings.
The beeswax will be the last thing to melt. When the mixture is completely liquid, stir in the flavors. If you want to add any colors, now is the time. I used yellow and red, just dipping the tip of a transfer pipette into the color and swirling it through the lip balm, then stirring to blend.
Now it’s time to pour the lip balm into the tubes. Once the lip balm has hardened, scrape off the excess in the tray and pull out the tubes. Cap, label, and enjoy!
This lip balm is dynamite! I had super chapped lips, and using this lip balm several times within a few hours worked wonders on my lips. I should have taken before and after pics – seriously!
When making lip balm, I try the flavor before pouring it. This time, I am very glad I did! The taste was bland. To remedy this lack, I added Sugar Baby Flavor Oil. (The recipe reflects the addition.) The Valencia Orange was weak at 0.5%, so if you really want the orange to shine, bump up the usage rate to 1.5%.
Also, I played a bit with color, adding a touch of yellow and red. The resulting color is more peachy than orange, but that’s fine with me. If you want to be more particular with color, mix the lip balm in a white plastic container so you can see the color. I used a glass container, so it was difficult to tell what color I had created.
We’ll have samples of this lip balm to share, so be sure to request it in the comments section of your order if you’d like to try it.
