Fragrance Testing in Cold Process Soap: Freesia, Wink, Baby Powder, Acai & Mangosteen, and Pink Grapefruit

I have more photos for our Fragrance Testing Series! This is a long series of blog posts that shows the testing of our fragrances in Cold Process Soap. We are testing ALL of the fragrances in our catalog at their maximum recommended usage rate for Cold Process Soap and showing you pictures of what the finished soaps look like in a side by side comparison with an unscented control batch. Since these fragrances are all being tested at their maximum recommended usage rate, I wouldn’t recommend using more fragrance. These soaps are strongly scented and will smell much stronger when wet.

Our first fragrance today in Cold Process Soap is Freesia. Our catalog notes that “Freesia is a super soft floral with a fresh twist not found in other floral scents. Almost powdery but ALL our non-floral staff liked this scent” Freesia smells light and fresh, an uplifting but still soft in nature.There was not any discoloration of note and this means you can make that yellow and white swirl you have always been dreaming of without worrying about the fragrance causing discoloration. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.5%, which is 0.4 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Our second fragrance in Cold Process Soap is Wink. Under the description for Wink our catalog says “Wink is a riot! A fruity top note blend of apples, peach and pear. Middle notes of rose jasmine and gardenia. Base notes of vanilla and wild berries. This fresh and pear dominate scent is fun and will bring a smile to your face!” What a fun fruity floral fragrance that will receive many compliments.There was minimal discoloration of note a soft pale creamy tan color. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.5%, which is 0.4 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Our third fragrance in Cold Process Soap is Baby Powder. According to our catalog Baby Powder is “a classic baby powder scent including subtle cedar, rose and ylang ylang.” An outstanding powdery, floral fragrance, it’s highly recognized and requested! Clean and fresh, a light fragrance that is great to use in soaps, candles and lotion products.There was moderate discoloration of note, a medium brown color. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.25%, which is 0.36 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Our fourth fragrance in Cold Process Soap is Acai and Mangosteen. According to our catalog, Acai and Mangosteen is “fresh scent has a tangy top note of lemon and citrus fruits. The middle notes are complex and very fruity, with a few hints of white lily. The base note is sweet musk. This is not a sugary-sweet scent, it is fresh, tangy and somewhat like a sweet grapefruit.” This scent is super citrus fresh and uplifting scent. I keep smelling this bar I can’t get enough.There was not any discoloration of note and this means you can make that yellow and white swirl you have always been dreaming of without worrying about the fragrance causing discoloration. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.5%, which is 0.4 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Our fifth and last fragrance for today in Cold Process soap is Pink Grapefruit. Pink Grapefruit according to our catalog states that it is “a fresh tart scent that is very invigorating. A good scent for morning showers or any other time you need help to get moving.” Just like a real grapefruit! A sparkling, juicy and sweet citrus fruit. A great pick me up and energizing scent. Love, love, love anything citrus, tart and sweet!There was not any discoloration of note and this means you can make that purple and white swirl you have always been dreaming of without worrying about the fragrance causing discoloration. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.5%, which is 0.4 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Recipe:

Our temperatures for lye and oils are between 125°F and 130°F to handle our currently cool weather. We make our soap with a 6% superfat. All of the batches we make are mixed to light trace and then the fragrance is added. After the fragrance is added we mix until the fragrance is incorporated and then we pour into the mold.
