Kid's Play-Do Soap

I don’t know about you but I love it when school starts. I love seeing the children scampering off of the bus heading for home with brightly color pictures in hand and ear to ear grins on their faces. I can just hear them bursting in the door, their back packs dangling crookedly from their shoulders as they tell you all about their day a mile a minute. What an image!

I can also imagine the mothers must enjoy the peace that occurs during the day while the children are at school. However, I think most people know at least one child who shows some anxiety to starting school each year. I remember I did! I wondered about how you could make school so exciting and friendly that kids wanted to go! I thought it would be nice to make a nice bright fun smelling soap that looked like it had been made with play-dough. I wanted something eye catching and exciting.

I decided to make this soap doing a column swirl. Have you seen any pictures of column swirls? I have seen some that are just geourgous! I just wanted to reach through my computer screen and take them! That is saying something considering how many STACKS of bars of soap I have. (Please don’t ask me about the liquid soap, please don’t ask me about the liquid soap.) 😉 I filled a small bottle with water so it would not tip and put it in the center of my mold. I sure had a great time!

For those who are not familiar with column swirls, let me explain them to you. A column swirl is where an object (I used a small jar) is placed in the center of the mold. Then pour the different colors of soap over the column. Change up the colors as frequently or often as it appeals to you. Once all of the soap has been poured into the mold, remove the column. Using a spoon or straw, swirl the soap into any pattern desired. Allow the soap to sit for 24 hours and cut. Allow for curing time.

With this being a play-do soap a bright yellow, dark purple, strong blue, forest green and a bright red. I didn’t want this soap to blend into the background. Well… unless the background is playdo. Do you think I accomplished my goal? Come join me in the kitchen for some brightly colored, child like fun!

Weigh all of the oils in a single kit into a microwave safe container. Heat gently until liquid. Add the lye to the water to for a lye solution. Mix the oils and lye solution and blend until a light trace is achieved for each soap kit. Add the Juicy Grape Fragrance Oil and color and mix well. Pour different colors over a center object into a mold, swirl and allow to sit for 24 hours. Cut the soap. Allow the soap to cure. Longer curing time will result in a harder bar. Enjoy!
