Last year I planted some lemon verbena in my garden. Normally, lemon verbena is a perennial in frost-free areas. If you have been to Utah than you know this place is definitely not frost free! We have some very harsh winters here in the valley. So when I went out to my garden this spring and saw that my lemon verbena had come back, I was so surprised! I was also so excited because dried lemon verbena leaves makes some of the most delicious tea I have ever had. This inspired me to make a Lemon Verbena Soap which brings us to today’s blog post.
I came up with this recipe using our 6-5-4-1 formula. If you are new to soap making you can read about this formulation on the series by Taylor, Introduction to Soap Making. I chose Refined Hemp oil as my luxury oil because I think that this oil often gets overlooked. This happens to be one of my favorite oils, it is so great for the skin! For this recipe I chose to use chamomile tea instead of water.
Lemon Verbena can be a very calming fragrance and upon doing some research I found that Lemon Verbena has been used as a way to control anxiety and nerves. I thought that the combination of the chamomile and Lemon Verbena would make a very relaxing soap bar. I know that for a lot of us, a shower at the end of the day is more than just cleaning your body. It is cleansing the body and soul of all the dirt, stress, and thoughts that this day brought.
I am going to send some samples of this soap bar down to the shipping department. I hope that if you get one of these samples in your next order you will bath with it, and come out feeling like a fresh, clean and more sane person than before. 🙂

Recipe in Percentages 37.5% Palm Kernel Oil 31.25% Olive Oil 25% Coconut Oil 6.25% Hemp Oil 0.4 ounces Lemon Verbena Fragrance Oil Q.S. Sodium Hydroxide Q.S. Chamomile tea |
The first step in making this soap is to weigh out the Palm Kernel Oil, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, and Hemp Oil into a microwave safe container. The next step is to microwave your oils until everything is melted. Set the oils aside and weigh out the chamomile tea and the Sodium Hydroxide, make sure to add the Sodium Hydroxide into the tea, not the other way around. The Lye solution and the oil mixture need to cool to between 110° to 130° F before you can move to the next step.
Once they are both cooled you can mix them together and add the Lemon Verbena Fragrance Oil. Using an immersion blender, stir until no oils rise to the top. Pour into the mold of your choice and allow it to sit for about 24 hours. Then you are ready to cut the soap. I hope you enjoy this recipe!
