Orange Butter Lip Balm

Here we are again with yesterday’s Macadamia Shea Oat Body Butter that turned out too heavy and feeling waxy. (If you didn’t see the first post, click here.)
To remedy the two problems, I removed the 3% Stearic Acid, adding that 3% to the water. I considered dropping the percentage of Shea Butter, but I did not want to lose the thick viscosity of the body butter. My goal here is a thick, rich, creamy body butter, so I’ll keep the Shea Butter at 10%.
What I’m hoping will happen is that the body butter will keep its lovely, creamy texture while losing the waxy feeling.

Weigh water, Macadamia Nut Oil, Shea Butter, Glycerin, Conditioning Emulsifier, and Oat Oil into a microwave-safe container. Heat in 30-second bursts until all ingredients have melted; stir after each heating. Use an immersion blender to mix well and create the emulsion.
Once the emulsion is stable and temperature is verified, allow the mixture to cool, stirring every so often to help it cool. Once it has reached 120ºF, add the Vitamin E Natural, Liquid Germall Plus, and fragrance. Stir well to combine.
Scoop the finished body butter into wide-mouth jars and cool completely before putting the lid on the jars.
Removing the Stearic Acid made a big difference in the waxy, heavy feel. Surprisingly, it did not much affect the thickness of the body butter; the viscosity feels about the same.
I think I might like this formula a little better with more water – perhaps as much as 75% water. It’s still a little heavy. However, it is much closer to the emulsified body butter I wanted to create, so I’ll call it a win!
I scented this second batch with Honey Almond Fragrance Oil. It smells divine! I did recall (after I’d added the fragrance) that Honey Almond is really strong. I could have added half as much and been happy with the scent. Remember, you can always add more later, but you can’t remove any!
Hope you’ve enjoyed this body butter. Let us know if you make it!
