Finished Father’s Day Soap

Yesterday we made the essential oil blend for today’s soap. It smells so good and I can’t wait to make today’s soap. The blend is woodsy, masculine, clean and fresh. I can’t wait to share a bar with my own father. I am very happy with how this bar smells and I can’t wait to make a new batch of soap with it! In fact, I think I want to make a batch at home just for myself! It is such a tranquil and natural scent and it is well suited to any home. Come join me!

I used my simple soap recipe to make today’s soap. I love simple and I find that not only is this recipe gentle and cleansing, it is also easy because it only require a few things, items that I always try to have on hand. Simple does not mean poor quality either. Dad deserves to get spoiled but life doesn’t need to be more complicated. It already has plenty of complications!

Weighing Essential Oil Blend

I also only used 1.25% or 0.20 oz of my scent blend for 16 ounces of fats. I wanted a moderate scent. Something strong enough to know it is there but soft enough so as not to overpower a small room. Remember, it is best to follow the elevator rule when it comes to scenting. If you cannot use a product then step into an elevator without driving people out, the product is too strongly scented. If you can step into an elevator, congratulations! You pass the elevator test!

Recipe:

Melted Oils

Weigh your oils into a microwave safe container. While the oils are heating in the microwave, weigh out your lye and mix with your water. This is also a good time to measure your essential oil blend. Remember to add your lye to your water, not the other way around. Your safety is our first concern!

Allow your oils and lye solution to cool. I like to put away my buckets of oils and set up my mold during this period. This helps keep my counters clean and my distractions to a minimum. When your oils are around 100°F-110°F, add your lye solution to your oils. Remember, using lower temperatures is important if you want smooth looking soap. Using your immersion blender, mix your soap until you reach a light trace.

Don’t forget, trace doesn’t denote a viscosity, it just means that we aren’t seeing the oils float to the top and separate out. Often we pour our soap into the mold when it is the viscosity of whole milk. That is extremely fluid!

Adding Lye Solution to Melted Oils

Allow your soap to sit in the mold undisturbed for 12-24 hours. Then cut into bars and place out on a shelf where they can dry. You can use your soap immediately but it will last longer if you allow it to dry completely. It will also keep longer if you store it in an area where it doesn’t sit in water constantly. Once the soap has fully cured, package it and give it away or use it yourself. Don’t forget Dad this coming Sunday!
