Turmeric Butter Lotion

We are excited to bring another recipe to our Adventurous Makers featuring Turmeric Butter, one of our newest butters.

Turmeric is infused into a blend of Shea Butter, Palm Butter, Coconut Oil, and Jojoba Seed Oil to make our Turmeric Butter. Since turmeric is noted to be “good stuff” containing components noted for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, our oil soluble and organic Turmeric Butter is an excellent ingredient for skin pampering products. While Turmeric Butter is an incredible product all by itself, I thought it would be wonderful to make a lotion and extend the use of this precious butter.

After perusing several recipes on our blog, I was inspired by this one. The title “Eerie Radioactive Waste Lotion” gave me a chuckle; Taylor was trying to come up with a fun Halloween craft to entice a six-year-old boy’s interest. What boy wouldn’t want to make radioactive waste?

Fortunately, there is nothing radioactive in this recipe – only good things! Gather some supplies and join me in making a lotion to make your skin feel great.

Turmeric Butter Lotion Recipe

INSTRUCTIONS:

Begin by weighing the water into a microwave-safe container. Add Turmeric Butter, Emulsifying Wax, Stearic Acid, and Glycerin. Microwave in 30-second bursts until all oils are melted. Use the stick blender to mix the lotion, then check the temperature. Make sure it has reached at least 150 degrees to completely melt the Stearic Acid. This may require another run through the microwave.

Once the mixture is hot enough, stick-blend more to fully emulsify it. Set this mixture aside to cool. If you have a large amount, it cools much more quickly if it’s poured into a plastic bag, which can be laid flat. Since I was making a small test batch, I just left it in the beaker.

Once the lotion mixture has cooled to at least 120 degrees, add the fragrance and preservative. I chose to use Forks Fragrance Oil. I love its fresh, evergreen scent. Make sure you stir or stick-blend well after this last addition, so the preservative is fully incorporated.

I used a funnel to pour the lotion into small squeeze bottles with disk tops. This lotion is thick enough to use in a jar, too. It is probably not fluid enough for a pump.

NOTES:

This lotion has good fluidity without being too liquid. When applied, it absorbs readily, but it leaves a bit of greasy residue that takes longer to soak in. That means it’s not something you’d want to use at your desk or whenever you do not wish to leave behind any greasy fingerprints. My skin felt soft and fresh after applying.

Tina pointed out that although a lotion is nice made with Turmeric Butter, she thinks the Turmeric Butter will really shine in an anhydrous mixture. Join me tomorrow when I make a whipped body butter featuring Turmeric Butter.
