Sodium Hydroxide for your soap making needs.

How do you know this product? Is it by the name of lye? Or caustic soda? Or did you learn it by sodium hydroxide? No matter how you learned, the key is knowing that you need this item to make handmade soap from scratch. If you use melt and pour soap, you do not need sodium hydroxide to convert any fats to soap because this was already done for you.

Our lye comes in solid form and will either be in bead form or flake form. When the solid lye is added to water, the crystals dissolve, and the water heats up. When the water heats, it will steam and carry some amount of the chemical, so please avert your eyes and nose.

As you should always do, a pair of goggles and gloves are required. Some folks use a respirator and/or fume hood to take the steam away from humans. You know your work area; please be safe.

Using fresh ingredients

Majestic Mountain Sage has been my go to supplier for soap making supplies for several years and I recently restocked sodium hydroxide in addition to the fixed oils. I had been using the last technical grade NaOH purchased long ago from a chemical supplier, which was fine when purchased but my last batch of soap didn't work out and had to be discarded. The material was too old and had degraded. Fresh ingredients are critical for having consistently good results. I like that my purchase of NaOH from The Sage was packaged in smaller containers to preserve freshness.

It is high-quality lye and works great! Love that there is a silica gel packet in there to help keep things dry. The only gripe is static but it can be managed.

I've ordered caustic from MMS several times now. It's always been bead form and high quality. According to bottle it's produced in Thailand.

shipped completely sealed bottles and then wrapped in baggie that is sealed with tape at top... Thank you for taking the extra precaution... Again quick response and shipping & always the Same Great product.
